This week has been rainy, and we all know that means cozy, and we all know THAT means lots of reading time with the doggos. I recently finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid and was, like most people, in love with the story. I don’t usually read contemporary fiction, but maybe I need to give it more of a chance? If they are all like this, I could be convinced!
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo follows our main gal, Monique, as she is invited to interview Hollywood star, Evelyn Hugo. Evelyn Hugo is a huge movie star who is slightly reclusive, and for some reason is now ready to spill her life story to Monique, which is a huge opportunity for Monique’s fledgling author career.
Evelyn starts to dig into her past, recounting her start in acting as well as her seven marriages to various men throughout her life.
As Evelyn tells her story to Monique, we get a good look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of the Hollywood scene. The book explores what it means to be a woman (both in life and in Hollywood), how that affects your relationships (business and personal), and shows the not-so-glamorous sides of show biz.
I was rating this book and writing a shorter goodreads review afterwards, and curiously opened some of the 1 star reviews for the story. Some people seemed to not enjoy the book due to the author repeatedly mentioning Evelyn’s breasts/rack, however I think this is exactly what the author was trying to do…women are often judged on their looks, or the way they look while doing something, while men are judged on what they are doing. The book is tastefully presented while exploring womens sexuality. I really loved this book and the relatively in-depth look at feminism throughout its pages (given that the book is not that long, and also still has tons of plot!).
I highly recommend this book, and will likely re-read this book in the future, which equates to a 5 star read for me. There was also something about reading the physical copy of this book that really hit the spot for me.
